Many
people have experienced the wonderful advantages of a ceiling fan, with
its cool breeze and its nostalgic style. Now there is increasing
interest in bringing this ambience outside, by installing an outdoor
ceiling fan. Besides the usual reasons for having a ceiling fan, there
are additional advantages to the outdoor version. For one, insects find
it more difficult to navigate near the downward draft and tend to stay
further away from an area with a ceiling fan. Another reason is that,
due to the nature of the fan itself, it is typically built of sturdier
material. Thus, you may find yourself lounging and enjoying your fan
for many more years outside.
Considering
Outdoor
Ceiling Fans?
There
are
a couple of additional things to consider for an outdoor ceiling fan,
that aren't as crucial for the indoor fan. First of all, there should
be at least seven feet between the bottom of the fan and the floor for
maximum efficiency and comfort. Secondly, these fans tend to be a bit
heavier than the indoor version, so they should be installed securely
into the surface. This will also reduce the amount of wobble that
ceiling fans are known for. Finally, most ceiling fans of the outdoor
type include a UL rating for moisture -- damp or wet. This is very
important if the fan will be in a fairly exposed area (consider winter
conditions as well as the summer, since this fan will be there year
round).
Outdoor Ceiling
Fan Styles
The good news is they have
been around for a long time now, so they are available in a variety of
styles, contemporary to nostalgic, traditional to themed. A popular
style to consider are the ceiling fans in the tropical style. This type
has a wider blade, which handles the open air better. If you want a
beach theme, the blades often are designed to look like palm fronds.
Whatever you decide, outdoor ceiling fans are great to have.
